Slow Notes Client Performance After Upgrading From R4 To R5

Technote Number: 1097142

Problem:
This issue was reported to Lotus Quality Engineering and fixed in Domino
Release 5.0.4.

Excerpt from the Lotus Notes and Lotus Domino Release 5.0.4 QMR fix list:

Client UI
SPR# DCOY4KNK4Z - Fixed a problem with the client caching that improves
performance when the cache limit has been reached. [5.0.4]Supporting Information:

Design notes are cached by the Notes client in the CACHE.DSK file. If adding a
design note causes the cache to meet its quota, Notes automatically purges
older design notes. Once a certain size threshold has been met, purging stops
and the new design note is added. If the add continues to fail, Notes compacts
the CACHE.DSK.

Before the implemented fix, when the cache reached its quota, only a few design
notes would be purged and then the cache would be compacted because there would
still not be enough space for the design note. This made the cache purge code
expensive when purging does occur. With the fix, a greater number of design
notes are purged before Notes resorts to compacting.
